Complex congenital heart disease diagnosed before birth and cured successfully after birth

Pregnant female came for fetal echo and her baby was diagnosed with complex congenital heart disease on fetal echo before birth. I counselled the parents regarding the disease and it’s outcome and need for surgery after birth. After discussing with Gynaecologist, parents agreed to continue the pregnancy and got delivered at our Hospital, Fortis Shalimar Bagh. Baby was kept in nicu, healthy baby with complex CHD. Double outlet right ventricle (DORV), large VSD, hypoplastic aortic arch with very severe coarctation. Prostaglandin E1 had to be started because of closing pda.

On third day of life, arch repair along with coarctation was done successfully. Baby was discharged and kept on follow up. At 3 months of age, total repair was done successfully. Baby came for follow up last week with normal cardiac anatomy and happy parents. Great team work and proper counselling could give a new life to the baby.

Heart diseases in such babies have to be diagnosed and treated early if we want to save such beautiful lives otherwise we can loose them 
Delay of even few days after birth can be lethal sometimes.
